Solution #1 Products

Lance recommends that the first step in treating hair loss would be to invest in the right hair products. The products you choose to use on your hair determines how healthy your scalp will be and this will ultimately impact on how your hair will grow. It is important to select the right hair loss treatment for men products that not only fight hair loss but maintain the health of your hair.

This first stage in fighting hair loss starts by eliminating any toxic products that you are using on your hair frequently. For many of us, we use products to clean our hair daily but do not understand the damage some chemicals and toxins can have on our hair and scalp. You need to be sure that the shampoos, treatments and styling products you are using are helping to keep your hair and scalp healthy and not damaging your potential hair growth.

Solution #2 Medication

Depending on your stage of hair loss the next solution Lance recommends to escalate to would be the medication options that are available. Additionally he suggests seeking your advice from a doctor if unsure.

Lance advises to escalate to the medication solution only once you have tried the product solution methods above. For many men, they can slow down hair loss by simply using the right bald men style hair loss products as outlined above.

However, if your hair loss is at a stage where you feel you need to escalate and take the next step, medication could be the next best solution.

Luckily, these days there are many different medical treatments for male hair-loss. But only a few have been backed with proven evidence and results.

Lance recommends the top 2 medication treatments for hair loss to be Minoxidil by Rogaine and Finasteride by Propecia. The two products below are the only treatments that have specific FDA and European Medicines Agency (EMA) approval for treating hair loss.

Minoxidil by Rogaine

Rogaine foam is applied to the areas on the scalp experiencing hair loss and is massaged into the area twice a day. The foam revitalizes hair follicles to help activate the hair growth cycle in men.

The foam has been clinically shown to reduce hair loss in 90% of men who used it for 4 months. The foam dries quickly so you're able to style your hair after it has dried and it's easy to fit into your daily routine.

To get Rogaine foam you can order a 3-month supply through the Rogaine website here.

Finasteride by Propecia

Finasteride is approved by both the FDA and EMA and is seen as one of the best treatments available for male hair loss.

Finasteride has been proven to slow further hair loss and develop the growth of new hair. The treatment is in the form of an oral tablet (1mg) once per day. Results are usually seen after 3 months of taking the treatment.

Taking finasteride reduces the scalp's DHT levels and works to help hair to regrow. DHT affects the hair follicles causing them to shrink resulting in thinner hair. By lowering the DHT levels, finasteride allows for the hair follicles to grow resulting in thicker hair and hair growth in areas that had previously stopped in growth.

To get Finasteride, you will need to book an appointment with your doctor to get a prescription for male pattern baldness.

Solution #3 Surgery

For advanced hair loss, Lance suggests hair transplant surgery to recover a full head of hair. With new advances in technology over the last 10 years this has now become more of a common solution for male hair loss globally.

Before considering this option it's important to talk to your doctor first to understand what you can expect before, during and after the surgery.

Lance has answered some of the most common questions he receives regarding hair surgery solutions below:

What is Hair Transplant Surgery?

Hair transplant surgery is the type of surgery that removes hair from an area of your body that already has hair and is moved to an area with thin or no hair. There are typically 2 methods for the hair transplant: the Follicular Unit Strip Surgery (FUSS) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE).

Follicular Unit Strip

The surgeon will remove a strip of skin from the back of your head and sews the scalp closed so the area is immediately hidden.

Follicular Unit Extraction

With the FUE procedure, the surgeon will shave the back of your head and the doctor will remove the hair follicles one by one. This area will then heal with small dots that your existing hair will cover.

With both procedures, once the removal of the hair is complete the second stage will be the same no matter the transplant method. For the final stage, the surgeon will clean and numb the area where the hair is to be placed creating holes and placing each graft in one of the holes.

When choosing to have hair transplant surgery, Lance suggests choosing your surgeon carefully as the final look will ultimately come down to the experience of the person doing the transplant.

Expectation after Surgery?

Once the surgery is complete your scalp will be tender, and you will have to wear head bandages over your scalp for 2 days. Most patients are prescribed antibiotics and can return to work after 5 days.

After 3 months, you will notice the transplanted hair will fall out, but new hair will start to grow after a couple of months. Most people see a 60% growth in hair after 6 months of their surgery.

To help with the hair growth after surgery, many people use Rogaine to assist the growth of new hair.

Costs of Hair Transplant Surgery?

The cost of hair transplant surgery depends based on how much hair you will be moving, your location and the experience of the surgeon.

As mentioned above, make sure you go with an experienced surgeon as this will largely determine how successful the result of surgery will be. Typically, most hair transplant surgery costs between $6,000 to $20,000.

Risks of Surgery?

As with all surgery, there are some risks and hair transplant surgery is no different. Some risks include bleeding and infections with unnatural hair growth and scarring on the skin.

It is highly recommended that before going ahead with the surgery that you talk with your doctor regarding the risks in detail, so you are in total understanding.

By consulting your doctor, they will then be able to advise whether the hair transplant surgery is a good option for you given your situation.
